What are the Federal Tax Credits for Homeowners?

Residential Clean Energy Credit

  • WHAT IS IT: A 30% TAX CREDIT FOR HOME SOLAR PV INSTALLATION. THIS INCLUDES LABOR COST TO UPGRADE FOR SOLAR SYSTEM, AND BATTERY STORAGE. THE INFLATION REDCUCATION ACT WENT INTO EFFECT ON JANUARY 1, 2023.

  • Everyone! No income requirements and no cap.

  • This is the star of the home upgrade provisions in the IRA. It was previously known as Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit. The original version of this credit was being phased out and would have been reduced to 22% starting in 2023. BUT NOW it is fully restored to 30% until 2032!! The following expenses are included:

*Solar PV panels or PV cells (including those used to power an attic fan, but not the fan itself)

*Contractor labor costs for onsite preparation, assembly, or original installation, including permitting fees, inspection costs, and developer fees.

*Balance-of-system equipment, including wiring, inverters, and mounting equipment

*Energy storage devices that have a capacity rating of 3 kilowatt-hours (kWh) or greater (for systems installed after December 31, 2022). If the storage is installed in a subsequent tax year to when the solar energy system is installed it is still eligible, however, the energy storage devices are still subject to the installation date requirements). Note: A private letter ruling may not be relied on as precedent by other taxpayers.

    *Sales taxes on eligible expenses

  • There are a few qualifications. One caveat is that you must have purchased the system, so avoid the FREE SOLAR ADS and ANY LEASING ADS! There are a few things that can reduce the amount you can claim on your taxes based on state incentives received. Also the battery storage incentive starts January 1, 2023. • Everyone! Any residential homeowner, including renters!

  • Everyone! Any residential homeowner, including renters!

  • No, not really… There are no income qualifications. Just remember it’s up to $2000 a year, so it will be prudent to have a plan for combining upgrades each year in order to maximize the incentive until 2032.
